In its former home, this black cat was a real neighbourhood joint-the kind where espresso and old men and soccer ruled. When it moved two blocks west in 2001, it underwent an inevitable yuppification. Still, Il Gatto Nero remains one of the best places on College Street to hang out with friends over multiple cups of strong brew, iron out the wrinkles in your next novel, or sip red wine with your newest undercover flame. The inevitable cat decor is, mercifully, understated. With the rich aroma of casual Italian fare wafting through the spacious room (blessed with gloriously high ceilings), it's cozy without being close. And of course, Il Gatto Nero is the primo place for watching soccer-as long as you're rooting for Italia.
